Building a table you actually use

Most tables need three things: something under the plate, something in hand, and something across the surface. Getting the sizes right

A tablecloth should drop 6 to 12 inches over the edge for everyday use, and up to 15 inches for formal dining. Measure the table, then add twice the drop to both length and width. All of our placemats are 14 x 18 inches, the size that fits a dinner plate with room for a glass and cutlery beside it. Dinner napkins are generous enough to sit across a lap rather than perch on it.
