Baby Alpaca Throw Blankets

Baby alpaca is the finest grade of a fibre that has kept people warm in the high Andes for centuries. It is light in the hand and generous with warmth, with a smooth, silky drape and long fringes that give each throw a quiet, artisanal character.

What baby alpaca means

Despite the name, baby alpaca has nothing to do with the age of the animal. It describes a particularly fine and soft grade of alpaca fibre, generally measuring approximately 19–22.5 microns in diameter, and alpacas of different ages can produce fleece fine enough to meet it. It is this exceptional fineness that gives baby alpaca its beautifully soft and refined character.

Why the fibre behaves as it does

The structure of alpaca fibre helps retain insulating air, which is why a light alpaca throw can feel warmer than a blanket of greater weight. The fibre is smooth rather than coarse, resists dust and odour naturally, and does not contain the same natural lanolin associated with sheep's wool — a quality worth knowing if wool has ever felt uncomfortable against your skin.

Alpaca also holds colour with unusual depth, so a throw bought today keeps its shade through years of use rather than drifting toward grey.

Where our alpaca comes from

Our alpaca throws are woven in Peru, close to the fibre's origins, by partner mills with whom we have built long-standing relationships. These mills hold Responsible Alpaca Standard and Responsible Wool Standard certifications, reflecting our commitment to working with partners who give consideration to animal welfare, the land and the people involved.

Choosing and caring for yours

The Paris Baby Alpaca Throw is woven at 235 GSM and suits much of the year; heavier weaves such as the Treble bring more warmth and more presence. All alpaca throws are dry clean only, and between cleanings, airing in a shaded spot for a few hours is usually all they ask.
