Why 14 x 18 inches
Placemat sizing sounds fussy until you get it wrong. Too small and the plate crowds the edges; too large and the settings collide on a narrow table. At 14 x 18 inches a mat holds a standard dinner plate with space for a glass above and cutlery on both sides, and it still leaves breathing room between guests on a table of ordinary width. That is why every mat we make is cut to it.

Placemats or a tablecloth?
Placemats read as relaxed and let a good table surface show, which makes them the everyday choice. A tablecloth is the more formal option and covers a table you would rather not look at. Many people keep both and switch depending on the meal.
Care
Machine wash in cool to warm water with a gentle pH-balanced detergent, avoid bleach and harsh chemicals, then air dry or tumble on low. Linen handles daily use better than most people expect and looks better for it.
