Linen or alpaca

A linen scarf is a summer piece. It breathes, weighs almost nothing, and lives in a bag rather than a wardrobe, as useful for shade and over-cooled rooms as for warmth.

Baby alpaca is the winter answer. The structure of the fibre helps retain insulating air, so it gives real warmth without bulk, and it does not contain the same natural lanolin associated with sheep's wool. If wool has ever made your neck itch, alpaca is usually the reason to try again.

Scarf or shawl

A scarf wraps at the neck; a shawl is wide enough to sit across the shoulders as a layer in its own right. Both work over a coat, and both are among the easiest gifts to get right, since neither depends on size.

Care

Linen scarves are machine washable in cool water with a gentle detergent. Alpaca and cashmere pieces are dry clean only.
